A blocked title, suspended account and terminated account are not the same problem. The fastest useful response begins by identifying which one Amazon has actually imposed and answering the notice it sent, not by sending a generic plea to every Amazon address you can find.

This guide combines Amazon's published rules with recurring lessons from authors who report successful and unsuccessful appeals. Community reports are anecdotal, so use them to improve your process, not as a promise of reinstatement.

First, identify the status

Blocked title

One book has been stopped during review or removed from sale. Your account may still be open. The notice normally identifies a metadata, rights, quality or customer-experience concern.

Suspended account

Publishing access is temporarily restricted while Amazon asks for a declaration, documents or corrective action. Follow the exact steps in the suspension email. A vague reply may waste the window Amazon has given you.

Terminated account

Amazon has closed KDP access and removed titles. The termination email usually explains how to appeal. Do not create another KDP account; Amazon's help pages state that a person should maintain only one account, and a new account can be linked to the terminated one.

The first 24 hours: preserve evidence before changing anything

  1. Save the complete Amazon email, including date, subject and sender domain.

  2. Take screenshots of the Bookshelf status, Account and Getting Paid messages.

  3. Gather contracts, licences, source files, image licences, ISBN records and earlier Amazon approvals.

  4. Make a simple timeline: title submitted, warning received, changes made, support responses and present status.

  5. Check spam and promotions folders for an earlier rights or verification request you may have missed.

Do not repeatedly upload altered files while the case is under review. Do not unpublish every title unless Amazon directs you or you have identified genuine violations. Do not threaten staff, speculate about algorithms, or send ten contradictory explanations.

Diagnose the likely trigger

Rights or trademark verification

Compare the title, subtitle, author, contributors, cover, description, interior images and quotations with your proof of rights. Amazon may ask for a signed publishing agreement, licence, invoice, permission email from an official domain, proof of website ownership, or evidence that a former publisher no longer controls the relevant rights.

For stock images, retain the licence, purchase record and source URL. For commissioned work, retain a signed assignment or licence. For a previously published book, explain the publishing history and provide the reversion or termination document.

Metadata or misleading customer experience

The cover and KDP fields should match. Remove unauthorized brand names, other authors' names, sales claims, “free” promotions, stuffed keywords, irrelevant categories and descriptions that promise content not present in the book. Collections and compilations should be identified accurately.

Poor-quality or duplicated content

Use Kindle Previewer and the print previewer. Check navigation, missing text, blurry images, broken links, scanned pages, repeated material, short or incomplete content, and files that redirect readers elsewhere for the main work.

AI disclosure or intellectual-property risk

KDP currently requires disclosure of AI-generated text, images and translations, including generated cover or interior art. AI-assisted editing does not require disclosure. Disclosure does not cure infringement: the publisher must still check copyright, trademark, privacy and publicity rights.

Manipulation of services

Audit promotions, reviews and Kindle Unlimited activity. Stop compensated or coordinated reviews, incentivized KU reading, click farms, misleading traffic and any service promising guaranteed reads or rankings. Preserve invoices and campaign settings from legitimate advertising so you can explain unusual traffic.

Identity, banking or related accounts

Make sure the legal name, address, identity document, tax interview and bank beneficiary are consistent. If you accidentally have more than one KDP account, contact KDP about merging them rather than trying to hide the relationship.

Build an appeal Amazon can review

A strong appeal is short enough to understand and detailed enough to verify. Use this structure:

  • Subject: Request for manual review - KDP account [last four characters or case number]

  • Opening: State the action and date. Ask for a manual review.

  • Understanding: Name the rule or concern from Amazon's notice in your own words.

  • Finding: State what your audit discovered. If Amazon made an error, identify the contradiction and attach evidence. If you made a mistake, say precisely what it was.

  • Correction: List what has already been corrected or what you will remove immediately after access is restored.

  • Prevention: Explain the concrete control you added: a rights file for every asset, metadata-cover checklist, two-person quality review, AI disclosure check, or removal of an unsafe promotion vendor.

  • Evidence: Name each attachment and what it proves.

  • Close: Ask Amazon to reinstate the account or specify any additional document required.

Sample appeal framework

I am requesting a manual review of the suspension communicated on [date] regarding [title/issue]. I understand that KDP requires publishers to hold all necessary rights and ensure that the cover, metadata and manuscript accurately represent the book.

My review found [specific finding]. I have [specific correction], and I have attached [document] showing [what it proves]. I have also reviewed the rest of my catalogue for the same issue and [result/action].

To prevent recurrence, I have added [specific process]. I confirm that I will comply with the KDP Terms and Conditions and Content Guidelines. Please reinstate the account or tell me what additional evidence is required to complete a manual review.

Use the exact declaration Amazon asks you to send when the notice provides one. Do not replace required wording with your own summary.

Where and how to submit

Reply to the suspension or termination email when it explicitly instructs you to reply. This keeps the case history together. If the message directs you to an appeal form or KDP Contact Us, use that route and include the existing case number.

After submission, wait for the stated review period. A concise follow-up that quotes the case number and supplies new evidence is useful; repeating the same message every few hours is not. If an earlier human approval conflicts with a later automated block, attach or quote the earlier case response and ask the reviewer to reconcile the two decisions.

Community reports show that some accounts were reinstated after authors supplied rights evidence, repeated Amazon's requested declaration, or pointed to a prior manual approval. Other appeals remained denied. No unofficial email address, consultant or escalation guarantees recovery.

What not to do

  • Do not open a replacement account in your name, a relative's name or a new company to evade termination.

  • Do not alter documents, addresses or bank ownership.

  • Do not purchase an account or “clean” identity.

  • Do not blame a freelancer without showing what you changed and how you will supervise future work.

  • Do not admit to conduct you did not perform merely because a template says to apologize.

  • Do not send private identity documents to addresses that do not match Amazon's official instructions.

  • Do not pay anyone who claims to have an Amazon insider or guaranteed reinstatement.

If the appeal is denied

Read the denial against your original notice and evidence. Submit another appeal only when you can correct a factual misunderstanding, provide a missing document, or show a substantive remediation. Ask for the specific category of evidence still required, even if Amazon will not disclose its detection methods.

If the dispute involves meaningful withheld royalties, a contractual rights conflict or identity theft, obtain advice from a lawyer qualified in the relevant jurisdiction. Preserve all records. Continue building a distribution plan that is not dependent on one retailer, but do not republish KDP Select-exclusive ebooks elsewhere while an active exclusivity term still applies without obtaining advice on the status of that term.

Prevention checklist

  • One KDP account only; ask support to merge accidental duplicates.

  • Consistent legal name, address, tax and bank details.

  • Written rights evidence for text, translations, cover art, fonts and interior images.

  • Accurate cover-to-metadata match.

  • Relevant categories and honest keywords.

  • AI-generated content disclosed where required.

  • Kindle Previewer and print-preview checks before every publication.

  • No compensated reviews, incentivized KU reads or manipulation services.

  • KDP Select ebooks kept digitally exclusive for the full 90-day term.

  • Copies of every Amazon notice and support case.
